My Agriculture Background:
I grew up in a small town called
Drain,OR My Grandfather ran a small
dairy first in the Napa,CA valley
before the Depression. Since they
did not own the
land, they lost the farm when the

Depression hit. A number of years later, they moved to Drain and started a new dairy on
their own 160 acres. Some years later my dad moved From Oakland,CA to Drain Where
my grandfather gave him one acre to homestead on. My father then helped my
grandfather on the dairy while working as a sheet metal worker later, my Father
purchased 21 acres that adjoined the one acre from a neighbor. At first, he just had
some dairy cows of his own but when my brother got into FFA he got some Registered
polled Herefords. My Mother loved Gardening and as long as I can remember, we had a
garden every year. I was born in 1960 and by the age 5 I was helping my mother in the
garden, weeding mostly. When I was 8 I started helping with the cows and by the time I
was 10 I was milking the cows. I was also doing other tasks such as Plowing, planting
and harvesting fruit. We also had Chickens, Rabbits, Pigs. And Sheep When I was 13 I
joined 4-H and my Dad gave me a Heifer from the herd as my Project. Also, that same
year my older brother moved to pursue a career in Portland,OR so many of the duties he
did, now fell on my shoulders to do. However, The next year I joined FFA and also had a
steer as a Project and Showed at the local and county fair. I did that every year until I
graduated from High School. It wasn't until 1993 When we bought our Place here in Port
Orchard that I could have a real garden again. In 2005 we bought 5 acres in
Packwood,WA since we could not afford to buy locally and we liked the Packwood area.
For now we are hoping to find someone local to run the day to day operation perhaps on
a barter or CSA Model and go up on the weekends. For Now we are still running our
business out or our home Here in Port Orchard. Well, thats all for now, Hope to see many
of you in the nest coming months
More to come....
